The future of mobile security

Day by day, more businesses are moving onto mobile platforms which is becoming so crowded that mobile security is an issue. In the past, security has continued to be a game connected with perimeters as well as encoding, irrespective of regular protestations that are usually dead and static virus scanning won’t capture today’s customised polymorphic malware. Since mobile phones are used as a key to your digital identity, hackers can use your mobile devices as a way to gain access into other areas. This means that these hackers not only attack your devices but others who are connected on the same network. As the security industry steps up to meet these challenges, the market for mobile security will be a growth segment for years to come.

The following are some possible predictions in the future for mobile security.

1.  More digital use may increase more threats

Many people use their mobiles for banking or shopping online which is becoming a sensitive issue. Threats are increasing slowly as more malware authors and cyber criminals are searching for devices to be hacked.

“The introduction of a number of digital wallet programs that allow users to pay for goods using their phones are likely to attract more attention from criminals”, says Charlie Miller, principal consultant at Acuvant.

  2.  Patching will be quickerfor more security

Once susceptibility is spotted, it needs to be fixed by the developer which can take months or years for a security patch to reach the user’s phone. It then requires adding to the latest Android OS by Google, recompiling into the manufacture’s version of the firmware and checking by the carrier.

Patches have to come faster, so as not to leave phones vulnerable to attack via known flaws, says Vidas, a PhD student in the department of electrical and computer engineering at the university.

This is another security feature that will be highlighted in future of mobiles.

3.  Location-based tracking will be more secure

Some mobile-device management and wireless-security applications can change depending which applications are Internet based and whether an employee is in the office or at home. Stock brokers on the trading floor, for example, would not be able to use social-networking applications.

Since location based mobile services are becoming more popular and widely used for mapping applications and some advertising services, they will also need higher security.

The growth of mobile security will probably coincide with an industry-wide security market boom predicted within the next few years. The IT security market forecast is expected to elevate to $30 billion worldwide by the year 2017.
